For Augusta and Staunton Maj Thomas Elder, and Travers Phillips. We hope these canvassers will make the canvass warm, and will not relax their exertions till the battle is fought and the victory won. We thought the- Richmond papers had announced I Judge Alex Cochran, a conservative canvasser for the entire. Valley of Va. We suppose, however, we are mistaken, otherwise the Spectator would have certainlyanoounc-ed him with his fellow-county men, Bumgardner, i7anger, Elder and Phillips. Land case decided. An importantland suit, involving extensive mineral lands in Bath county, was decided in Judge McLaughlin's court, last week, at Bath C.

H. It was the case of Randolph vs. Dempsey, for ejectment. The tract embraced the old Copo survey which had been held in possession by citizens of Bath lor probably SO years. The case was argued by Baldwin and Cochran of this cUj, for plaintiff, and by Skeen, lerrill and defendants.

The jury returned a verdict for plalntiST, who is a resident of Pennsylvania, we, believe. It has been stated to us, that he discussion between the legal gentlemen was a great deal folding manifested. An appeal was made by defendant's counsel in behalf of the occupants of the land, because of their being natives of the section where the land isloeated Col Baldwin met this with a fierce and powerful attack, which i3 thought had much to do in determining the judgment of the jury, Correspondents. We have received letters from various portions of the slato giving us assurances of a favorable public sentiment for the Republican ticket. An intelligent gentleman who has traveled through Augusta, east Rockingham and Green ct.unties, writes us that the finest feeling prevails, and that a number of persons who voted for Greely will support 7ughes.

He himself is of this class. Another letter from high authority in eastern Virginia speaks confidently of-success, and another- from Southside gives an encou-agiDg report In this connection we will state that we desire our cor-r spotidents to' givo their candid opinion bas el upon the most reliable facts they can commend. Wq dq not wish make atiy wild statements iu this canvass, and thereby deceive the people. Our readers may rest, assured that we will s.iy that we Jo not believe to be true, or that does not come from such sources as we haje confidence in. U.

Watts of Roanoke, his brother-in-law, and accompanied by several members of the deceased's family. Mr. Holcotnbc was a gentleman of fine literary culture, and a writer and eaker of onsidrable reputation. He was a diatinguishedjneniber of the Confederate Congress. Rockingham Items.

The last Register contains the announcement of Wright Gate wood as a candidate for the Legislature, and a call for John J. Bowman to become a candidate. The kitchen of Wm. Loeb was broken into last week, and a quantity of sugar and coffee, and some other articles stolen. Mr.

Benj. F. Hughes, of Etushville, had his leg broken by the kick of a horse, on the 30th of July, while driving a spring wagon. Ilev. L.

S. Reed, presiding elder of a North Carolina district, with his family, are on a visit to Harrisonburg. Harrisonburg is looting up. On a recent visit, we learned that considerable animation was pervading business generally there. Encourage Home Mechanics.

We noticed at the depot a few days two 2 horse wagons, imported directly from the manufacturer inVVis-consin. We do pot know by whom they were purchased, but we do kmw that Mr Lickliter, of this city, can make just as good, 'and. we doubt not at less cost. These wagons were flashily painted, and made a very tractive a pearance. We have mechanics here in that line of business who can put on the fancy touches equal to any others, and we can se no reason why all orders of this kind are not left witk our owu workmen.

Vie also ob served at the depot a steam boiler and engine directed to Jones Long, Harrisonburg. Id came from Richmond. This kind of work be done just as well, ami a little cheap er, either at the establishment of Eyler, Cooper or that of i'uo Staunton Iron Works, W. A. Burke, manager.

Our people. of the Valley should work together, and give mutual encouragement and e.Ki.stance. Until this is done we will not enjoy the prosperity we should, for the success of the meohaaiuat brandies largely contributes to seiner! prosperity. Col. John Baldwin.

During service at the Episcopal church on last Sabbath Col. Baldwin was taken suddenly sick, with a tempo rary paralysis of his arm and leg. He was sit ting in his whev he remarked to Mr Bald win that he felt as though ha would faint. Dr. Donaghc was sitting near, and told him he had better go out.

The Col. remarked that he could not get up. He was then carried out of. the church, laid on cushions and afterwards convey ed to his residence on a litter- We are pleased to learn that he has eutirely recovered the use of his 1 rm and is now only affected with debility. The attack on this occasion was similar in character, but more aggravated, to the one he had several months ago.

He had cently been to New York to consult eminent medical gentle men, as to his health, and war informed that he was in perfect health, and could resume with im punity his Since then he has been engaged in several important cases, requiring great mental labor. A few days previous to this attack he appeared in an important land suit in Bath county, involving large property, in which he made one of the ablest arguments of his life, aa we learn, and gained the case. He alent but little the night succeeding, and at 4 o'clock the following morning took the stage at warm Springs and traveled to Millboro and then entered the cars for Richmond. He returned home on Saturday, and Sunday morning ate a very hearty breakfast. It was thought this over exertion and imprudent diet hrought on the attack Sunday.

Since the above was in type, and just as we go to press, we learn that Col Baldwin is worse, and fears are entertained as to his recovery. A profound concern pervades the entire community. Shenandoah Valley Road. Ths prospect of the early completion of this road is flattering. Work is progressing as rapidly a' possible on the line up to Lur and arrangements are being made to locate the route to its connection with the Chesapeake Ohio road, either at Staunton or Fisherville.

The advantage of Staunton as the point of intersection, independent of its central position, ani-the trade already established here, are foundyfoit being only one half mile farther in distanctijan Fisherville would be, and making the conuctipn here, would save the distance, of six mile between Staunton and Fisherville on the Chesapeake Ohio bed, which to make its Southwest Last week, Mr. Wp. MaLelland, president of the Shenandoah Vtlley road, ex-Gov. A. G.

Curtin, of Mr. Morris, chief engineer of the road, and Jenas Walker, vice President, visited Staunton, fofr purposes of observation. We understand taat all of these gentlemen were much pleased With the general appear ance of the country, an especially with Staun ton. The importance 0 the road to this point the early completion of or jfc lsnerviue was 1m- pressed upon them by tlie information obtained by their inspection. andjthey left fully convinced that the policy of the mpany was to push forth renewed energy.

ot course, have a ma-int the xoad will touch ward their enterprise wi The right of wafr will terial bearing on the pi the C. O. Road. We inderstand that has already been obtains! to Fisherville. It remains to be seen what wall 1 the disposition of the property owners op th Staunton line.

It certainly is an important consideration with the people of StauntonJ an consequently every citizen of the county, fir tl prosperity of this place, is necessarily reflctc 1 all through the rural districts.
