STAUNTON, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1912 MONTGOMERY 70 WARD audience. Perhaps these selectees had no relish for the Job they are doing, she said, but they are do JiJat Mw-. Jljit Ai(: ing their part In a serious way. miss Garson said she would tell any Virginia boys she saw train ing in California that she saw their home folks and tell them that they are not alone, because their own folks are with them. Not a Favor The speaker also pointed out Save that the purchaser of a War Bond ow eve ee is a good investment and she also contrasted what the purchaser is HI i contributing to the war effort with what the boys are giving up.

What good will money be if this country loses the war, she asked, saying that if the war Is not wen it will take $500 in American money to buy a cup of SELECT FROM DOZENS OF SPECIAL VALUES III FURNITURE, RADIOS, STOVES AND HEATERS BUY WHILE STOCKS ARE COMPLETE! coffee. 'Let's hoe potatoes," she said, and not think about what is going to happen ten years from now. The people of Virginia have tra ditions, Miss Garson said, and live up to them splendidly. They also have felings and imagination, she praised, expressing confidence that they would be willing to back to the limit any members of their family in the Armed Service, or members of their neighbor's family, or any of the boys. She read a statement made re Chairman Timberlake said today he hoped the investment in bonds incident to Miss Carton's personal appearance here would be as much as $100,000.

Red-haired Greer Garson continued her triumphant tour of the state when she appeared here last night and captivated some 600 people by her gracious manner and the dramatic emotional appeal she made In asking them to support the fighting men by investing In War Bonds and Stamps. Miss Garson urged the throng gathered in the Mary Baldwin College auditorium not to get behind the man behind the gun but to get up alongside of him and by buying War Bonds every week to the extent of ten per cent of their pay checks to furnish the fighting men with the things they so desperately need. Any of her listeners would be glad to give bullets to one of this county's boys who was out of ammunition on the fighting line, or to furnish him with food or medicine if he were hungry or ill; or to lend a hand to a sailor who was overboard in a sea of flaming oil or to help the flyer fix his parachute if he had to bail out. With logic she pointed out that all could not help in this dramatic way but everyone could do his part tp see that money is available with which to purchase this equipment. It was the first time the newly erected auditorium had been used and the crowd assembled early in their desire for choice seats.

Shortly after eight o'clock, the program was opened by Wm. T. Mclntyre, who served as master of ceremonies. After group singing of a verse of the national anthem and the invocation by the Rev. Dr.

J. Lewis Glbbs, President L. Wilson Jarman of the college spoke a brief welcome, pointing out that this was the first time the auditorium had been used, terming it a most auspicious beginning for the structure and trusting that the memory of the evening would linger long and set a pattern for the use of the auditorium in the years to come. Made Citizen Next presented was Lyle G. Wel-ler, president of the local Chamber of Commerce, who thanked Dr.

Jarman for making the building available for the meeting and stating that he was happy in the small part his organization had played in its erection. By authority cf the mayor, he proclaimed Dr. Jarman a citizen of Staunton. He accepted. cently about Wendell Willkie concerning the African front to the effect that he was struck by what a little more eouinment in th hands of the Allied Army would MsassssVssaaaWI have done to the German General Rommel.

"American boys are on that front," she concluded. "There is no more I can say. Keep it up, will you? Thank you." Won All Awards After receiving prolonged ap plause, Miss Garson returned to the microphone to tell the audience that Billy Crimmett. a Leader Publishing Co. newsboy, had sold more than 112,000 ten-cent war stamps and thereby won all of the awards offered by the United States Treasury Department.

keep up the good work. Miss Garson said she liked to talk to people of the big-little cities like Staunton, because the large cities are too much alike, are too cosmopolitan. If the smaller jdaces are the heart of America, she said, then' everything Is all right for "its heart is beating with a wild pulse tonight." Some of Staunton's boys are leaving today to go into the service, she conttnued, and were present last night, and maybe some of them will go to California, the Hollywood citizen pointed out, where many of the boys are train operation of the Home Demonstration club. John C. Layman, local teacher of vocational agriculture, was director.

Probably outstanding in both talent and interest was the horse show both afternoon and evening, with a number of entries. Exhibits of cattle and draft horses were excellent. Farm exhibits of T. R. Beard attracted considerable attention, while women of the community had interesting displays of canned goods, cakes, pies, flowers, handwork, pets, etc.

Other exhibits included field crops and poultry. One of the feature attractions was the show of Capt. Mike Brown of Lexington and his trained animals. A bear on roller skates, trained goats and monkeys delighted the children. Carl Reece of Brownsburg engaged in -a westllng match with the bear and the latter is still able to skate.
