Varner, 25, son of Ar. and Mrs. Edward Varner of Hightown, has been promoted to the grade of cor poral, according to a recent an nouncement by Colonel George Polk Jr, commanding officer of the deoot where Corporal Varner is assigned. In the Alaskan theatre with the Eleventh Air Force since April of 1943, Corporal Varner is a radar mechanic. Before coming to Elmendorf Field he was assigned in the Aleutian Islands.

Induoted May 2, 1942, he had his basic army train ing at Kessler Field, later at tending radio school at Scott Field, 111. After leaving the Blue Grass HlKh School in 1936, Corporal Var tier was a mail carrier and also a Xanner. HEARS FROM HUSBAND Mrs. Fred Ragland, of this city, recently received a letter from her husband, Pvt. Fred Ragland, saying he had; arrived safely somewhere overseas.

Pvt. Ragland left to serve in the Marines June 16, 1944. He was sent to Parris Island for his boot training and then later was transferred to Camp Le Juene. He left for over sea duty December. He likes overseas very well but says It's nothing like the good old U.

Craig, after not hearing from him tor over a month. He stated he was well and would like to hear from his friends. He said hello to all his good friends. "Firebrands of Arizona" At the Strand IFor the first time since he began making pictures more than 10 years ago, Simley Burnette, over-weight comedian who has the top role in Republic's "Firebrands of Arizona," does not sing a song in the film.

The rotund funnyman has a straight comedy role, sans music, in the riotous Western now showing at the Strand theater. For many months now, Burnette has wanted to play such a role as he has in the zany action film, "Firebrands of Arizona," in which he is a cowboy hypochondriac, who confused with a killer named Beefsteak Discoe, who looks exaoUy like him. Chittum, Stuarts Draft. NEIL IN PHILIPPINES MJss Mattie Neil of Doe Hill re ceived a letter from her brother, Pfc. Homer Neil, somewhere in the Philippines, stating he was well, and to tell all his friends "hello" for him. He sent a Japanese dollar which he had taken off of a Jap he killed recently in an invasion. Pfc.

Neil has been in the service nearly three years and crossed the equator in June, 1944. He saw action in New Ouniea and New Britan, before going to the Philippines. HITE IN KENTUCKY Mrs. Hansford Hlte of Vesuvius has received word from her husband, Private Hansford Hite, that he has been transferred from Fort Meade, to Fort Knox, Ky. Private Hite was Inducted into the army Jan.

22, and is now receiving training to be a radioman in a tank division. WITH HOSPITAL UNIT Sergeant Frank B. Hamilton is now stationed In New Guinea with a hospital unit. Sergeant Hamilton entered the service in November, 1942, and has been overseas since the summer of 1943. His wife, the former Miss Iris Crawford, lives at Cornwall, Va.

HAMILTON IN FRANCE Private Lawrence Hamilton of Vesuvius Is now serving with the army In Frimr. Private Wa.mHt.Mi entered the service May 13, 1944, and was sent overseas in October. FURLOUGH ENDS Pvt. Nelson Loan of Vlctorville, has returned after spending 23-day furlough with his wife and small son of Millboro, also with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Walter Loan. Pvt. Loan has been in service 30 months. Pvt. David H.

Loan, brother of Pvt. Loan, is in a hospital in Eng land. He has a fefoken leg anoTanT injured right hand. His mother received his "Purple Heart" last week. STOUT IN EAST INDIE8 Mrs.

E. J. Stout of Fort Defiance has been hearing from her son, T-Sgt. Edwin T. (Jack) Stout, who is in Netherlands East Indies.

He is in good health but homesick to see some snow. He says "hello" to his friends. RIDDLE MISSING Mrs. C. M.

Riddle of Newport News has received a message from the War Department saying that her husband, Private Carl (Mike) Riddle, was missing in action in Belgium on Jan. 14. Private Riddle is a son of Mrs. Minnie B. Riddle of Staunton, route three, and had only been overseas about three weeks.

ot DOWNEY IN FRANCE Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Downey of Augusta Springs have received a letter from their son, Pfc. William K. Downey, saying he has been transferred from Germany back to France.

He is getting along fine and says to tell all his friends hello," and to write. His may be obtained from nis parents. CAMPFIELD, WHITMORE REPORTED IMPROVING William S. Campfleld, secretary of the Virginia State Horticultural Society, is recuperating at King' Daughters' Hospital from an attack of pneumonia. His physician said that it was a typical type of the disease and that the patient is very much better.

He has been overseas about eleven months. SERGEANT GILBERT KILLED Mrs. Edythe Alphln Gilbert of Lexington has been notified by the War Department that her husband, Technical Sergeant C. H. (George) Gilbert was lulled in action Jan.

7 on Luzon. Mrs. Gilbert attended Mary Baldwin College and lias relatives here. Before entering service, Sergeant Gilbert was branch man ager of the Whiting Oil Company in Lexington. FRANK IS COMMISSIONED William (Billy) B.

Frank, for merly of Weyers Cave, received his wings and commission as second Lieutenant Feb. 2 at Waco, where he had been attending school. Lieutenant Frank and mother, Mrs. W. F.

Frank, of Washington, are spendinga few days with Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Tutwiler of Verona.
