Robin J. Kehrer, 24, of Sterling and formerly of Greenville, was found dead in a stairwell about 10:30 a.m.

Monday by another person who worked in the building, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Officer Julie Hersey, the department's public information officer, said an arrest has been obtained for Jason A. Morant, 33, of Sterling. He is charged with first-degree murder. Ms.

Kehrer and Morant lived together, worked in the same office and had an "estranged, onagain, off-again" relationship, Ms. Hersey said. Ms. Hersey said that the office building was open at the time' Ms. Kehrer died.

She said that some people heard Ms. Kehrer' yelling at someone, but no one saw Ms. Kehrer die. Police do not know the exact time Ms. Kehrer died but do know it was sometime Monday morning.

An autopsy reported the cause of death as asphyxiation, Ms. Hersey said. Police talked with Ms. Kehrer's mother and people she worked with before obtaining an arrest warrant for Morant, Ms. Hersey said.

But now police do not know where Morant is. Ms. Hersey said investigators are contacting everyone who knew him and Ms. Kehrer to try to figure out where he might be. At this point, she said, they do not have any clues but are hoping he is still in the northern Virginia area.

Morant is described as black, 6-foot-1, 240 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He may be driving a light blue 1994 Honda coupe with Virginia license ZHG 9907.
