23: No. 2 Red Winter Wheat Roanoke area 3.27; Moral Majority editor critical of Olin's ERA stand ROANOKE (AP) The editor of the Moral Majority Report has called 6th District Rep. James Olin's support for the new Equal Rights Amendment shocking, especially since Moral Majority backers supported Olin's election in November. "A lot of our people supported him because they just didn't like, who was that other fellow? Kevin Miller," Harry Covert, editor of the magazine, said Wednesday. Moral Majority supporters who voted for Olin were surprised when he became a sponsor of the new ERA, Covert said.

Miller, a former state delegate from Harrisonburg, was the Republican candidate and Olin is a Democrat. Moral Majority, the political lobby founded and led by Lynchburg evangelist Jerry Falwell, doesn't openly endorse candidates, but its Republican leanings are clear. Miller carried Lynchburg, but later complained that he expected to beat Olin by a larger margin in that area of the district. It was a factor in his loss, Miller said. Olin, reached at his Washington office, said he never made any secret of his support for the Equal Rights Amendment during the campaign.

"It shouldn't have shocked anybody." As for Covert's assertion that he received substantial support from Moral Majority members, "I just don't know," Olin said. Covert called himself a "loyal Republican," but said other Moral Majority leaders are not as closely tied to the party. Covert's column in the March issue of Moral Majority Report was headlined "Virginia Congressman Jim Olin Shocks Constituents, He Supports the ERA" and said Olin had "gotten off to a sour start" in his first term.
