14 Staunton, Leader, Thursday, February 1J, 1981 Campfire Chatter Hunter safety meeting held by Juanita Colvin The second in a series of hunter safety and education coordinators' meetings took place recently at the Red Carpet Inn in Waynesboro. Presenting the program were Capt. James Kerrick, safety officer from the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries office in Richmond, and Lt Donald R. Miller, assistant supervisor, education, of the Thomas Jefferson District from the Staunton office. Those present were personnel from the Game Commission connected with the hunter safety course, county coordinators from each of the 18 counties in the Thomas Jefferson District, and some volunteer instructors.

James Kerrick, safety officer of the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, for his contribution in promoting and teaching the Virginia Hunter Education Program. (Photo by Juanita Colvin) ing the instructor to advance from basic to senior instructor, and on to master instructor. The latter two involve more intensive training in such fields as woodsman-ship, trapping, first aid, and survival. After the discussion and question and answer session came the highlight of the meeting.

Kerrick then presented to Frank Taylor, Augusta County coordinator, a plaque from the Virginia Game Commission inscribed: his outstanding contribution in promoting and teaching the Virginia Hunter Education Program." The meeting was then turned over to Hunter McCoy of Lexington, Rockbridge County coordinator, and Taylor, who gave introducing Kerrick to those present, Miller began with a discussion of the problems facing the coordinators, such as communication with volunteer instructors, how to approach groups for taking the course, and any problems facing the coordinators in their county. Let me point out here, being an instructor myself, that these persons involved, other than Game Commission personnel, are strictly volunteers, giving of their time, providing their own transportation, and doing this all for the personal satisfaction they derive from teaching others the safe handling of firearms while afield and at home. "I've been shot myself," one fellow commented, "so I know what it's like!" To him, impressing the importance of the safe hunter cannot be stressed enough. If his time and effort involved saves one accident, it has all been worthwhile. Other issues discussed were the inception of a bi-monthly news release to the coordinators to keep them abreast of "what's happening" statewide and within then-locality.

A chain of command was established, starting with the Richmond office on through to the individual instructor, so that each person involved will know where and how to get needed materials and who to contact. The basic hunter safety instructor course is to be changed, allow talks on what they are doing in their respective counties. It was decided the group should meet again in August. A buffet luncheon followed the close of the meeting. Any person or group in this area interested in having a hunter education program may find out details by contacting Taylor at (703) 337-2175 after 6 p.m., or Miller at the Staunton Game Commission office.
