1 Staunton Leader, Wednesday, February 11, 1961 1 For 16th straight cruise by Cougars Lee's fast break spelled the end of any Cougar hopes in tne tinai Lee ended the game with a 16-6 run. The Draft dropped to a 1-6 mark in the district and 1-13 overall recordd. The unbeaten Baby Leemen also wrapped up the district title with a 52-39 win, their 16th victory of the year. David Redman with 15, Kevin Madden with 10 and James Taylor with 10 led the attack. Madden had 14 rebounds for Lee.

"They just dominated the boards in the first half in getting nine of 19 points in the first quarter off the offensive boards and then got seven more in the second quarter in the same way.

You can't win when you give away the defensive boards. The game was tied twice at 2-all and 4-all in the opening minutes but Lee moved in front to stay when Randolph put in a rebound, White followed suit and Waddy hit a pair to make it 12-6. The Draft stayed within range on some nifty shooting from the priemeter by Jim Cheplais, Phil Fit-zgeculd and Gary Smith to make it 19-14 at the buzzer. But the Draft went almost five minutes in the second quaarter without a point while Lee got its offense in high gear with Randolph hitting three straight at one point and Waddy also putting in three fielders. This made it 38-20 at the half.

Although the Draft held a two-point edge of 18-16 in the third quarter, 1 teamen By HUBERT F. GRIM JR. Sporta Editor STUARTS DRAFT The Fighting Leemen ended any chance of another team tying them for the regular season title in the Valley District chase here Tuesday night in cruising by the hosting Stuarts Draft Cougars, 13-54. It was the ninth regular season title for Coach Paul Hatcher's club, which marched to its 16th straight victory of the year and ninth straight in district action. "Lee is definitely the best ball club in the area.

They shoot over you, they are quick, and certainly crash the boards," losing Coach Bob Maxwell noted. Hatcher felt his club had given a good account of itself in picking up its 16th win. "We had a good run in the second quarter to give us a working margin at the half. We played even in the third quarter and then blew it open in the final quarter. "I felt we passed extremely well tonight.

Tubba Maddox definitely had his best night for us as he handled the ball well and came up with 10 assists," Hatcher noted. Looking at his other players he pointed to Tommy White who has been passing well and scoring in double figures. "He had six assists tonight." Turning to Clifford Waddy, who led the scoring with 21 points, Hatcher noted that he had improved as much as anyone on the club. "He is getting stronger as the year unfolds." Tony Randolph, Lee's 6-foot-7 center, added 19 points and pulled in 14 rebounds. The Leemen had five men in double figures with White popping 10, Maddox 11 and Vincent Toye 14.

Gary Smith was the lone Cougar in double figures with 10. (Photo by Ken Bosserman) Fort decks Central By BUDDY BOSSERMAN FORT DEFIANCE Thirty-two minutes playing time elongated to 116 actual minutes, 56 total fouls, 37 turnovers and rough-and-tumble basketball which accounted for the 14th victory of the year for the Fort Defiance Indians Tuesday night as they downed Shenandoah District-rival Central of Woodstock, 75-56. From the outset, the two teams, who had squared off in last year's Group A state finals, went at it tooth-and-nail until the final buzzer sounded and Fort had avenged an earlier road loss to Central which had snapped a 35-game winning streak over two seasons.

"It feels good!" exclaimed an elated Fort coach Don Landes after the big win. "I was afraid someone was going to get hurt out there," he continued, commenting on the rugged game. "We just executed better tonight than we did at Central," he added, "and 22-for-39 (56 percent) field goal shooting speaks for itself! There is something about playing at home before an overflow Fort faithful crowd that brings out the best in the Indians. They played inspired and aggressive ball to gain the hard-earned victory, which assures them of sole possession of second place in the league for now. Fort's record improves to 14-2 overall and 8-2 in the district while Central falls to 6-4 in the district, 12-4 overall.

Again it was junior standout Dell Curry who led all scorers with 21 points, but, according to Landes: "As usual, Eddie Richardson, had an outstanding floor game at point guard and our bench was strong with the likes of Mike Lambert, Ed Pruitt and Danny Phillips coming in to play heads up ball for us," praised Landes. Central's star 6-4 forward, Kenny Lambiotte amassed all of his season-low nine points prior to halftime as the Fort defense boxed him off entirely in the second half. Foul trouble beset not only Lambiotte, but all of the five Falcon starters. Four of the five fouled out by the end of the third quarter and reserves played much of the entire last quarter. Central was limited to only field goals in the last half but cashed in on 12 of 14 free throws (26 of 34 for the night).

Meanwhile, what had been a tight game in the first, half broke open for Fort in the last two minutes of the second quarter. Trailing 28-27 with 1:26 left in the half, the Indians scored eight unanswered points four by Eddie Richardson, two on a Dan Pruitt rebound layup and a big bucket at the buzzer by dependable Keith Curry which shot the hosts into a seven point lead at intermission. Scoring the first 13 points of the third quarter, Fort made a rout of things by sending the two Currys, E. Richardson and Lambert to the charity stripe for nine free throws in the quarter. Dell Curry's slam dunk following a rejection of a Lambiotte shot at the 4:22 mark in the third stanza brought the house down and put Fort up 48-28.

Curry concluded the contest with three steals, four blocks and eight rebounds. Keith Curry sank three of four technical foul shots as Central coach Jerry Walters received two 'Ts' during the second half as the heat of the game Coach Gene Lilly's jayvee Indians won their 12th game of the season, 70-60, behind the superb play of John Curry and Randy Herman. Five Fort players scored in double figures. Roger Clatterbaugh and Dale Showaler with 12 each, Larry Lilly, Curry and Herman with 10 points each. Danny Golladay led the Falcons with 15 points.
