Sheffer MOUNT SOLON Verne Knott Sheffer, 85, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Augusta Health in Fishersville. She was born in Augusta County on Jan.

4, 1928, and was a daughter of the late John H. and Carrie Edna (Grinnings) Knott. McComb LYNCHBURG George Henderson McComb of WestminsterCanterbury went to be with his Savior on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. He was born May 23, 1919, in Stuarts Draft, the son of Moses H. and Annie S. McComb. He graduated from William and Mary College in 1940, then enlisted in the U.S.

Navy, where he rose to the rank of commander. He served on the USS Thurston, seeing action in the North Atlantic including the D-Day Operation. He continued serving in the Naval Reserves while beginning his career in education. He did his graduate work for his master's and doctoral degrees at U.Va. His educational career included teaching at Wilson Memorial High School in Fishersville and as a school principal in Staunton, Lynchburg and Ellicott City, Md.

His career culminated as assistant superintendent for Lynchburg Public Schools. He and his wife, Betty, have made their home in Lynchburg since 1965. After their retirement, they enjoyed traveling the world, playing golf in 37 states and 10 foreign countries. They built "Ben Bee," a summer home in Coleman Falls, where they raised horses and a large garden for many years. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Dabney McComb, of WestminsterCanterbury; daughters, Deborah (Tom) Rolfe of Lynchburg, Brenda Beck of San Carlos, Calif; son, John (Kathy) McComb of Crestview, grandchildren, Andrew Rolfe, Kimberly Preston, Aaron McComb, Michael McComb, Keri McComb and Laura McComb; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Dennis Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at 3 p.m.

Knott and wife, Evelyn, of Bridgewater and Vance Knott and wife, Pauline, of Mount Solon. She also is survived by six grandchildren, Amanda Sheffer, Olivia Sheffer, Julia Sheffer, Justin Shifflett, Lindsey Shifflett and McKinsey Shifflett. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Willodean Botkin, Ruth Surface and Myrtle Knott; and two brothers, Herman Knott and Lee Knott. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m.

Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater with Pastor Bob Weeks officiating. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at the funeral home.
